Best
of Old Las Vegas: Classic Hotels |
 |
If you've been around the Vegas
block a couple of hundred times you're probably sick of the same old spots on the same old
Las Vegas Strip twice (or three times) per year. It's OK, we understand; it's possible to
get bored of the entertainment smorgasbord called Sin City.
That's why we feel once casino gamblers get bored of seeing Caesar's Palace or the
Bellagio Fountains one should get historical with their hotel selection. Head to Fremont
Street where all the old school hotel and casino spots are and you'll find as much rich
history of your home town (unless your home town is Rome of course). And to make sure
you're not overwhelmed by all the old-school spots in the city we're outlining our
favorite spots:
Binion's Horshoe Casino
If you're looking to learn about the gangster side of Vegas we suggest heading to
Binion's. Its former owner, Benny Binion, had a laundry list of criminal history before
and after buying the spot in 1951.
The FBI says he was notorious for theft, carrying concealed weapons, and two murder
convictions. And by the 1940s he was considered the head boss in Dallas. Unfortunately,
his seedy past caused him to lose his gaming license and he had to give the casino away to
his sons, who later lost it to Harrah's.
The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino
This spot opened in 1906. That was a year before the first Chicago Cubs World
Series! We can't believe this place is still standing, but it's still there for your
enjoyment when you visit Fremont Street. This spot is so old it has the "Original
Shrimp Cocktail," something that every casino has today. But we doubt you'll find it
anywhere else for $1.99. Check this spot out before its walls cave in.
Golden Nugget Las Vegas
If you miss the grandeur of the Las Vegas Strip, downtown Vegas can still hold
its own with the Golden Nugget. It's got 38,000 square feat of gaming bliss to ensure
you're never out of places to play. Oh and be sure to check out the biggest golden nugget
in the world. This thing weighs 27.21 kilograms and is 46 centimeters in length! Try to
find a rapper sporting this on their watch!
Fremont Hotel and Casino
If you plan on chilling on Fremont Street you've got to head to the Fremont
casino. It's been around since 1956 and has 32,000 square feet of places to game. How much
history does this place have? Wayne Newton got his start in this place in 1959. How cool
is that? You could be playing your favorite casino games in the spot that gave "Mr.
Las Vegas" his start. |
